Josef Hyrtl (7 December 1810 – 17 July 1894) was an Austrian anatomist.. Biography. Hyrtl was born at Kismarton, (now Eisenstadt) in Hungary.He began his medical studies in Vienna in 1831, having received his preliminary education in his native town. His parents were poor, and he had to find sosoefray [further explanation needed] the expenses of his medical education.

Upon his retirement, Hyrtl began to sell his anatomical collection . The Mütter Museum acquired this collection of 139 human skulls from Viennese anatomist Joseph Hyrtl (1810-1894) in 1874. His work was an attempt to counter the claims of phrenologists, who held that cranial features were evidence of intelligence and personality and that racial differences caused anatomical differences. This museum is a treasure trove of odd medical histories. Among this collection of over 25,000 specimens are 139 skulls collected by Doctor Josef Hyrtl. This website takes an in depth look at those skulls. The collection is justly famous, but it takes some upkeep: last winter, the hot gift online—in some circles, at least—was a skull “adopted” from the Hyrtl wall; prospective “parents” paid $200 for a skull’s restoration and remounting.

There are 139 skulls in the collection, all of them with interesting and unique stories to be told. I spent several months looking at their stories and creating an organized catalogue for them.
